The working title was Kirk’s Public Bar. But the latest from the team gradually colonising the Little Bourke Street-Hardware Lane corner will be known simply as Kirk’s.
It was conceived as a casual pie-and-a-pint kind of place. But this being the work of Ian Curley, Con Christopoulos and Josh Brisbane – the trio behind Kirk’s Wine Bar and French Saloon – you can count on more than that.
They’ve spent a king’s ransom on the shapely American oak bar, timber panelling and terrazzo floors in the upstairs dining room.
The simple menu focuses on bar snacks such as croques monsieur, pork pies and ploughman’s lunches alongside six or eight ever-changing beers on tap.
Downstairs, the bluestone cellar dining room seats 40, and there are streetside open-air benches where locals can stop for a drink.
Kirk’s, 382 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne, is open daily 11am-11pm.
